Japanese Lacquered Box Decorating Class PM

*Product image for illustration purposes only. Actual product may vary.

We are excited to announce our newest class, a rare opportunity to learn Japanese Lacquerware techniques from a visiting artisan from Japan and take home your very own lacquer box!

Japanese Lacquerware (漆器 shikki) is a traditional Japanese craft used on a variety of objects, such as boxes, musical instruments, and furniture.  A natural varnish, it serves as a protective coating and is decorated with beautiful designs.  This technique takes many years to master in its traditional form, as only highly-skilled and dedicated artisans can safely work with the traditionally-used sap of the Chinese lacquer tree, which is toxic until it dries.  However, this beautiful art can be safely replicated using cashew paint.  This class will be taught using cashew paint and gold decorations, and is a special opportunity for craftspeople at any experience level to safely learn to make Japanese Lacquerware from a master of its traditional form.

Guests will spend the class painting a black or red Japanese lacquer box and adding gold powder decorations while enjoying a selection of snacks and tea.  A week later, each student will receive their own finished box to keep, wrapped in a custom cloth (choice of bright red, purple, or lavender).

*Please note: the paint contains nut, if you have a nut allergy it might cause you an allergic reaction.
